My own experience with Reiki has been focused on the healing that humans can derive from Reiki: for myself and for other people I give it to. I have spent time since my first attunement giving myself Reiki, going to Reiki circles to give to others, and learning and talking about it to my Reiki Master and my fellow Reiki students.
I was just talking to a friend the other day about my new passion for horses. She mentioned that she has a friend that does Reiki on horses. It made me think of another friend a while ago who specifically did Reiki on dogs and was even attuned for “dog Reiki.”
These women are both so well-intentioned and from my own experience, just a little misinformed.
Reiki is a natural healing energy that occurs on the planet and has been here as long as humans have. Humans can use it to heal their physical bodies and their auras. It would almost be magical in its ability to heal if it weren’t so real and pure.
The insightful Master Usui found a way to attune humans to be able to give it to others and to receive more from the Reiki energy that just exists in the world in our everyday lives. His attunement ritual is designed for humans, though, not for animals. It is not meant to attune animals to give Reiki and it is not meant to attune humans to give Reiki to animals.
Don’t get me wrong, though. Humans who give Reiki to animals aren’t doing them any harm, and are often very well-intentioned. The animals probably love the attention of a human trying to give them Reiki.
Reiki isn’t for animals because they have their own healing vibrations that are natural to them and heal them. Reiki is our healing vibration that is natural to us. Giving it to animals doesn’t hurt them, but also doesn’t heal them or help them the way it does for us. It’s so comforting to know that there exists on the planet an energy that can help and heal us from the everyday wear and tear that comes from living in the world. And energy exists in the world to heal animals, too! It’s just not Reiki.
I understand why so many people want to give Reiki to animals. We love our pets. We love our companion horses, dogs, cats, and other animals. Our hearts are in the right place. I myself have met some horses that I fell in love with and just couldn’t stop paying attention to. However, I was always aware of the horse’s natural balance and spontaneity. I didn’t feel that the horse ever needed my help in healing itself, relaxing itself, or rebalancing itself. I have always felt that if a horse needed a human’s help, it would be from a veterinarian, not from a Reiki student or even a Reiki master.
Again, we’re not doing these animals any harm. It’s just that Reiki isn’t for them, it’s for us.
What a wonderful opportunity for us as humans, too. An opportunity to rediscover Reiki when using it on ourselves and on others. An opportunity to see how well it restores, relaxes, and rebalances us and how well and simply it does all those things. An opportunity to really see the beauty of its healing ability for humans.
If you want to find out more information about the healing vibrations particular to animals, please find someone who specializes in animal-specific healing — someone who is not using Reiki but who instead has information and knowledge of species-specific vibrations and is using them on a regular basis.
